performing tunes from his long-awaited new album,_A Life in the Day of B19: Basement Fables_

Sunday 14 September: Soweto Kinch _Multi-award winning saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch is one of only a few artists whose appeal traverses underground and mainstream audiences, and who is equally respected in both jazz and hip hop circles. His 2003 debut album, Conversations With The Unseen, which saw him combining the two idioms to fine effect, gave him his first MOBO award, and a Mercury Music Prize nomination. Soweto is constantly developing his performing approach, and his distinctive methodology of taking hip hop to a jazz audience and vice-versa has earned him acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. Closer to home, Soweto is currently Birmingham Town Hall’s Associate Artist in Residence, an acknowledgement of his increasing importance in the artistic life of the city. Tonight, Soweto opens the new season of The Live Box with his quartet - guitarist Femi Temowo, bassist Neil Charles, and drummer Graham Godfrey - performing tunes from his long-awaited album A Life in the Day of B19: Basement Fables, the follow up to 2005’s Tales of the Towerblock.__

Mike Sole, a pianist out of Leicester, is one of the most captivating players on the Midlands music scene today. In his trio, he is backed by the powerful rhythm section of drummer Joe Manger and bassist Wayne Matthews. The spontaneous and experimental nature of the trio’s music brings out an assortment of flavours: from eloquent Bach-like chordal passages and deep driving grooves, through electronica-influenced sounds and off-kilter polyrhythmic beats, to furious high speed chases with one another through inter-twining sonic landscapes.

plus The Cobweb Collective…

In addition to his guitar duties with The Cinematic Orchestra, Stuart McCallum has an extensive career as a solo artist, performing and recording with Kenny Wheeler, John Surman, Ari Hoenig, Tim Garland and Don Weller. His ‘phenomenal improvising and restless creativity’ make him one of the most original guitarists around, and his music veers between extremes of mesmerising beauty and explosive turbulence; tonight Stuart performs with his own Quartet. __Trumpeter Sam Wooster's quartet, The Cobweb Collective, explores the extended possibilities of his instrument, combining jazz improvisation with electronic loops and effects. Reminiscent of Vietnamese trumpeter Coung Vu, The Cobweb Collective has been described as ‘a collision of Jimi Hendrix and Ornette Coleman’; tonight it premieres newly developed material ahead of an early 2009 debut album release. _ _

The Invisible is guitarist Dave Okumu (formerly of Jade Fox), bassist Tom Herbert (Polar Bear/Acoustic Ladyland) and drummer Leo Taylor (Gramme/Zongamin). Live, the trio is augmented by a fourth person, Pete Hanson. The Invisible has wide-ranging musical influences: there are touches of Sonic Youth and Radiohead in its guitar experimentation, harmonic influences from Queens of the Stone Age, and rhythmic, African elements borrowed from Talking Heads; classical and medieval church music, and even Prince, get nods in the mix. A debut album, Image And Distraction, produced by electronic pioneer Matthew Herbert, and including vocal contributions from Eska, is released shortly.
