Jay Phelps' Quintet

Jay Phelps' Quintet

Jay Phelps is a young, creative and gifted jazz trumpeter. Originally from Vancouver, Jay attracted the attention of Gary Crosby when he moved to London at age 17. Jay went on to lead the jazz sensation Empirical, with whom he toured several major festivals. He has performed with a range of jazz artists and he intends to educate the next generation of Jazz musicians through his project Jazz Youth. He has his own quintet, made up of Shabaka Hutchings on Tenor Sax, Jonathan Gee on piano, Karl Rasheed-Abel on bass, Gene Calderazzo on drums and Michael Mwenso on vocals. Jay also has a new album, Jay Walkin’, which will be released in November 2010. It captures the traditional spirit of Jazz music, with Mwenso’s playful vocals underpinned by Jay’s composing and arrangements. The Quintet come to the Drum to perform on the 24th October.
